This topic provides information resources that cover a range of different debt recovery methods that creditors may be able to use to recover outstanding debts including court action such as county court judgements and charging orders and creditor-petitioned bankruptcy. It also includes information on sanctions against debtors such as repossession of property and goods, imprisonment and other sections. Charging orders (14 items)

Includes information resources that provide details on charging orders including the numbers of orders made. A charging order is an order of the court that places a 'charge' on a debtor's property such as a house or piece of land or other property. Charging orders tend to be used to safeguard a creditor's interest to ensure payment of a debt at a later date.

Court Action, Judgments and Decrees (26 items)

Includes information resources that provide details on County Court Claims, Judgments and Decrees (Decrees in Scotland only) including the numbers of claims, judgments and decrees made. A creditor may commence court action to obtain a decision from the court to determine that the debt is owed and how it should be repaid.

Creditor-petitioned bankruptcy (39 items)

Includes information on the numbers of bankruptcies that have occurred as a result creditors petitioning for bankruptcy due to outstanding debts.

Debt buying companies (4 items)

Includes information on the actions of debt buying companies. Debt buying companies usually buy 'delinquent' debts from creditors at a fraction of the value of the debt and either then pursue the debt themselves or engage a debt collection agency to collect the debt.

Debt collection agencies (12 items)

Includes information on the actions of debt collection agencies. Debt collection agencies generally collect debts on behalf of creditors or debt buying companies and charges for its services in collecting the debt.

Imprisonment (4 items)
